Music Recs: Make The Yuletide Gay

Happy holigays! Last year around this time I made a rec list of Christmas movies, so I figured this year it’s time for music. Especially since so many great songs came out recently!

The whole mix that I’m putting at the end of this post is almost 50 songs long. Which means I didn’t put them all on the post itself, but instead focused on my absolute favourites of 2020 alone.

I didn’t want to simply put the soundtrack of Happiest Season on my mix and call it a day (yes, it’s all by LGBT artists!), so I looked far and wide for more songs for you guys! My other goal was to make this mix as full of original songs as possible, and I mostly succeeded there.

In any case, believe me, you do want to check out the mix too, for even more holiday gay cheer!

    Music Recs: Love Is Home

Not to get ahead of myself, but this is probably the best mix I have ever made. Not just because I used only great songs which also work together very well, but most of all because of theme of those songs.

I used one of the Twenty-One Love Poems by Adrienne Rich (from the collection “Dream of a Common Language”) as the original description of it & it should tell you better than I ever could, what the theme here is.

I wake up in your bed. I know I have been dreaming.
Much earlier, the alarm broke us from each other,
you’ve been at your desk for hours. I know what I dreamed:
our friend the poet comes into my room
where I’ve been writing for days,
drafts, carbons, poems are scattered everywhere,
and I want to show her one poem
which is the poem of my life. But I hesitate,
and wake. You’ve kissed my hair
to wake me. I dreamed you were a poem,
    I say, a poem I wanted to show someone . . .
and I laugh and fall dreaming again
of the desire to show you to everyone I love,
    to move openly together
in the pull of gravity, which is not simple,
which carries the feathered grass a long way down the upbreathing air.

I think you will all agree that having someone love you makes you feel like you’re home, safe & sound. And gay love somehow makes that feeling more pronounced. And so here we are! Enjoy, and let me know what you think!

Music Recs: A Chorus of Ghosts

Some time ago I said on twitter that I want to make a music rec list & asked what vibe should I go for. Hannah Abigail Clarke gave me “songs at the midsection of 🌈 and ☠️🦷🦇”. (And by the way, if you still haven’t, you should totally preorder Hannah’s book, The Scapegracers. Teen gay witches!)

I’m not going to lie. I was pretty liberal with that theme, and so my choices might not be the most obvious. All of them are by LGBT artists, of course, so all of them cover the rainbow part, really. But I treated the death and scary, monster-ish part in a few different ways.

So there are songs that talk about dying & suffering (Die Alone, Martyr) of people, but also places (Tayf (Ghost). There are songs celebrating life (BL, Gaia). There are songs which vibes made me think of a dark night. And more! Hopefully my choices are self-explanatory, but please don’t ask me to give my reasoning in actual words.

(The title of the mix comes from Tayf (Ghost) by Mashrou’ Leila.)

If You Liked [Insert Straight Media Here], Try…

Forgive me if I keep this brief, this post took longer than I expected, and I really need to sleep. But here it is! The final part of our “like this, try that” series, this one dedicated to solely straight media.

Apologies for the sort of… eclectic mix of media. When we thought about this, we realised we didn’t actually know a whole lot of straight media ourselves, so asked twitter (and pooled some ideas). So yeah.

    Happy Pride and enjoy!

If You Liked This Artist, Try…

Another part of our “If you liked this, try that” series! So far, we recced you books and movies this way. And now it’s time for music!

I chose ten pretty popular musicians and for each one, based on their most distinct traits, I tried to recommend you 3 less popular artists. Of course, everyone I encourage you to listen to in this post is a member of the LGBT community.

Happy Pride, guys! Discover some new music!

    Music Recs: Pride Month Special

We don’t talk about music a lot on our blog, but I guess when we do, it’s with a bang! Which is to say, I’m here today with a list of 60 LGBT artists. And yes, I say artists, not just songs – each and every one of them is an out member of our community. (Well, there are a few bands and some of them only have a lead singer who matches that description, but you know!)

I had to make some decisions regarding the way of presenting all this beauty to you. First of all, I divided those sixty artists into three groups of wlw, mlm & those who are not cis. (I was gonna go with “trans/nonbinary”, but there are also genderfluid, gender nonconforming artists, even a Two-Spirit one, so I figured I need a pretty broad umbrella term here). Obviously, there are some intersections within those groups, but I wanted even numbers… And lastly, I linked them all to my favourite album/single of theirs on Spotify, so I could put covers & make it all look pretty.

So! Take a quiz and figure out who should you listen to!* Or just scroll through them all.

    Take the quiz!

*Charlotte made me specify that when I say “dancing alone in your room” in the quiz, what I mean is dancing slowly with your eyes closed, the sound of rain coming through the window & maybe by the end of it you won’t be as tired anymore.

Music Recs: 6 Sapphic Songs as Delicate as Mary Oliver’s Poetry

I’m sure I’m not the only one who still can’t believe Mary Oliver died. She was such an amazing person, such a calming force in this world. Her poetry was always simple but evoking the most complicated feelings; delicate but hitting straight in the heart with a power of a bulldozer. She was one of a kind. She was making the world a softer place just by sharing her words with us.

So I was wondering how to celebrate her beautiful legacy on Reads Rainbow, because there was no doubt in my mind we have to talk about a lesbian poet as iconic as her. And I decided that as much as I love her poetry, I want to do something different. I mean, I can let you know what are my favourite collections of hers… But I wanted to translate her tenderness into another medium. Hence the songs.

What works better with poetry than music, right? (I’m from Poland, we have a whole genre literally called ‘sung poetry’. Remind me to talk about that more some day.)

I selected six songs by sapphic artists that sounded to me as softly as Mary’s poems. I hope you’ll enjoy. And when you’re already at it, check out what 2018 LGBT music videos I recommended the other day.
