Book Recs: Lesbian Adult Fantasy (II)

Ever since I made the first of these posts about 4 years ago now, I’ve been meaning to revisit this series and do a, if not completely updated version, then at least a follow-up. A part two. Ten more lesbian adult fantasy books you should read! (And, before the end of the year, the G, B, & T equivalents too!) So, get yourself ready to dive right in!

Book Recs: LGBT Lit in Translation

I have to admit, I had another rec list planned for today (one that I keep meaning to do but I still haven’t got the perfect ten books), so instead, I’m following Anna’s suggestion of translated LGBT lit. Some time last year, I decided to challenge myself to read a book from every country in the world and, in part, this is a result of that. So, let’s make 2024 the year of opening horizons and reading in translation!

In making this list, I’ve tried to keep from adding books that I had on the classics rec list (which was only a few anyway) from some years back. There is, however, more overlap between this and the various lists we did in 2021 for Pride Month. Those are longer lists, though, so if you read this list and you want more recs, go check them out!

Before we start, if you’re reading this post, please take the time to visit gazafunds.com (@gazafunds on twitter), where you’ll find any number of campaigns from Gazans to share and donate to. Every time you refresh, you’ll see a new campaign spotlighted. You can also “adopt” a campaign, which means repeatedly sharing it online to keep it in people’s awareness and collect donations. So, please do!

    Book Recs: Polish LGBT Nonfiction

I’m sorry to probably like 99% of our followers, but as you can see, today’s rec list is extremely niche. I can’t have you forgetting one person of this blog’s duo is Polish, though! So let me ramble about some books you won’t be able to read yourself, unless you want to sacrifice years of your life to learn our language… It’s gonna be fun (for me)!

Więc tak, dziesięć polskich książek lgbt z literatury faktu! Głównie biografii.

And hey, none of those titles are available on Everand, but if you still want to check out that service but don’t have an account yet, use my invite code to get 2 months for free! (This also gives me one free month.)

Book Recs: Adult Sci Fi (II)

It’s been a while since we did one of these, right? What with our beginning of the year focus on releases lists, plus work taking up a lot of time (and energy!), rec lists have been sort of on the backburner. But not any longer! Since there’s been so much incredible sci fi being released in the past few years, what better time to do a part two to an adult sci fi rec list I first made, oh, only 4 years ago now. Part one of this rec list be found here.

But before we start, I’m sure everyone is aware of the genocidal campaign that’s been conducted on Gaza for the past 6 months. If you have a bit of spare income and are looking for places to donate let us direct you to a few: you can find verified gofundmes to donate to here and here, you can donate to UNRWA directly, or to the Crips for eSims for Gaza campaign, or you can purchase your own eSims (tutorials here and here), or to organisations directly in Gaza, or you can donate to Anera. On top of this, you can also keep lobbying the people in power, and protesting, and just generally disrupting everyday life.

In the Intersection: Palestinian LGBT Media

We write this on the first day of a temporary ceasefire in Gaza (a ceasefire, it must be noted, that Israel is reported to have already broken several times (& reported even by the BBC)), that is set to last four days. Even as Palestinian hostages are returning home to their families, the settler colonial apartheid state is doing what it can to disrupt and destroy such moments of happiness. So, now is the time to be even louder than before, to make the ceasefire permanent and to call for the dismantling of the occupation. The number of dead in Gaza is over 20,000, with thousands more still trapped beneath the rubble. Almost 2 million people have been displaced in the past seven weeks.

Starting next week, Friends of Al-Aqsa are running a Palestine Awareness Week, full of events to keep Palestine in public consciousness. We wanted to post to coincide with that, and to specifically focus on LGBT media about Palestine. One of the common threads from Zionist actors seen in the past month and a half relates to the question of how the LGBT community can support a country where such existence is punished by death. But, as many more eloquent people have said, our struggle is one. No one is free until we are all free. And are there not also LGBT Palestinians who deserve our support? And to suggest that Israel is somehow a paradise for gay people is pinkwashing to the extreme (for example, there are reports of the IOF blackmailing gay Palestinians into betraying their people, and the excerpt Omar Sakr posts in this on instagram alone should tell you more than enough as well). As I said, there are people who’ve put this more fully, and more eloquently, than us, and we would stress you read their words: Autostraddle’s article from October, and The Nation’s from November.

So, this post. In here, you’ll find books (fiction, nonfiction & poetry), films & documentaries, & music, primarily from Palestinian creators (although, you’ll spot a couple of films where this isn’t the case, but the focus remains on Palestinians within them). Before we start, we’d also like to note the following two films which we didn’t include on the rec list: Polarized (2023), dir. Shamim Sarif & Polygraph (2020), dir. Samira Saraya. The reason for this was because, given the premise of each film, we would have preferred to be able to watch them before recommending, which we ultimately haven’t had time to do.

We hope you enjoy what’s in this post and urge you to keep talking about Palestine!

    * indicates that the authors themselves are Palestinian (or diaspora), but the characters featured in the book may not be.

    Book Recs: Poetry Collections (IV)

“Away from the lamp lie truths which are uncomfortable it seems not only to Zionists but also to those who fear a direct confrontation with the Jewish state. There in the darkness one can find the only relevant framing of the conflict in Palestine: as a struggle between a settler-colonialist movement and a native indigenous population that has raged since the late nineteenth century until today”. — Ilan Pappé in On Palestine

As we post this, Israel is conducting a genocidal bombardment on Gaza. Given our platform, small in comparison to many as it may be, we feel we must preface this post thus. We do, and always will, stand with Palestine and its people, with their right to self-determination and freedom from colonisation.

If you’re sat, wondering where to start in educating yourself, or how best to help, we offer a list of a few nonfiction books to start with for the former, and for the latter, some resources for writing to your local MP (or other representative) and organising your own protest locally, if there isn’t one near you. To find out about protests near you, we’d recommend following groups local to you fighting for Palestinian freedom such as the Palestine Solidarity Campaign.

Nonfiction books we recommend: The Hundred Years’ War on Palestine, Ten Myths About Israel, Voices from the Camps, Lawrence in Arabia, The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine, Palestine: A Four Thousand Year History, Nakba, The Palestine Nakba, Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions.

And what actually prompted this particular rec list, is a tweet we saw. On October 18 at 8 pm ET, there’s going to be a virtual gathering/poem-sharing/call to action/fundraiser for Medical Aid for Palestinians. So first of all, here’s a link to RSVP, and second of all, here’s some poetry for you.

    Book Recs: LGBT Comfort Reads

We all have books that we love to read over & over again. Or sometimes we just think about them all the time and that’s enough, too. Sometimes they simply occupy a space in our brain (and heart). It’s about craft, yes, but most of all it’s about the feelings those books evoke in us. The way they make us feel safe & loved, & cherished. And at times maybe a lot a little bit heartbroken.

So that’s what I’m offering you today. Ten books that I’ve been feeling lowkey insane about for months, and sometimes even years. A lot of books about love.

And hey, a lot of those titles are available on Scribd, so if you want to check out that service but don’t have an account yet, use my invite code to get 2 months for free! (This also gives me one free month.)

    Book Recs: Shakespeare Retellings

Waaay back (also known as 19th May, according to the artist formerly known as Twitter), I touted the idea of a Shakespeare retellings rec list which (drum roll please) is now here! In general, it’s a somewhat limited selection of Shakespeare plays that get considered for retellings, so I’ve tried to give as wide a range as I can (within reason, based on what I’ve read and you know, trying to get a wide range of rep in too). So, here are ten retellings you should get your hands on!

Book Recs: Lesbian Fiction That Isn’t Romance

I’ve been thinking about this list for a little while. Because, while I’m sure we can all agree that sometimes all you need is a good romance, there are other times when a romance just isn’t doing it for you, but something more litfic-esque, a bit more introspective and (on occasion) in depth, suits just fine. Yes, this is a different list to either of the litfic lists we’ve done haha what do you mean. But anyway, if you’re looking for a lesbian book to read in this, the birth week of all lesbians everywhere, then here are 10 to start you off!

Book Recs: Butch Lesbians & Studs

The other day, as I was reading a mainstream f/f romance, I thought to myself, wow so much of mainstream f/f centres feminine and/or femme characters. Where are all the butches? (I say “mainstream”, because, firstly, these are the books that seem most popular, and secondly, if you go into indie and self-published works, you’ll find a lot more butch & stud rep I can guarantee.) So, this list, which I’ve been meaning to write for a while anyway, was born. There are only lesbians on this post, but if you’re looking for masc bi women, I did make a small list for someone here.

Book Recs: LGBT Books About Reality TV Shows

It was really just an off-hand comment I made to Charlotte the other day, about how reality TV shows are becoming a pretty popular setting in books and possibly there are enough such books for a rec list. She thought that’s a good idea. And who am I to say no? Especially if it allows me to rec a book by one of my favourite YA authors!

I did cheat a tiny bit and included an upcoming book on the list itself, I know! But to counter-act that, I added one more book. And listed two more upcoming ones at the end. I’m truly bringing all my gifts to y’all here today.

And hey, a lot of those titles are available on Scribd, so if you want to check out that service but don’t have an account yet, use my invite code to get 2 months for free! (This also gives me one free month.)

    Book Recs: Epic Fantasy

Closing in on the end of March and, finally, our first rec list of the year! Completely by accident, this follows on from our last one of cosy fantasy with something that’s almost entirely the opposite. Epic fantasy, in my mind, is characterised by lots of POVs, a story that spans multiple continents or countries, and also just a feeling. The stories feel epic, like a saga. So, with luck, these 10 books fit that remit!

    Book Recs: Best of 2022

As ever, this is an incredibly difficult post to write. There were so many good books we both read in the year, that picking only 10 each was a challenge. In the end, I (Charlotte), at least, had to go by the criteria: a) did it stick with me?, and b) how well was it crafted. Tricky criteria still, but it helped.

Once again, we have divided our list into 3 categories: backlist books, books released in 2022 & books to be released in 2023 that we read ARCs of (and, in one case, a 2024 book). Each of these categories, would you believe it, actually has 5 books. For once, we’ve managed to stick to our original plans! (Though there are so many books we still missed out, some of which we featured in our little advent calendar thread we did through December.)

But anyway. Here’s our list of our favourite 25 books of the year! If you want to have a look at the last few years of lists (and how our tastes have or haven’t changed), you can find them here: from 2018, from 2019, from 2020, and from 2021.

    Book Recs: Cosy Fantasy

Suffering through the shortest days of the year as we northern hemisphere folk are, what better rec list for these long winter nights than cosy fantasy. Snuggle up with a blanket and watch the snow fall outside as these books warm your soul. It’s a tried and trusted method, believe me!

Before we start, though, let me just mention that our awards start tomorrow at 10am GMT! Nominations run until 4th January, so if you’re looking to support the great LGBT lit published this year, check it out.
