It’s niche rec list time! I asked, and you voted, so here it is: ten of my favourite love confessions. In LGBT lit, only, obviously.
A good love confession can leave you with such a warm feeling inside, and make even the hardest of hearts feel almost like they don’t mind romance (disclaimer: I don’t actually know this). So, clearly, I had to spread the love (lol). And that warm feeling.
The Afterward
E. K. Johnston
Goodreads
Rep: lesbian mcs, Black mc
Why Should I Read It?
I see your “I love you”s and I raise you “I don’t need you but I want you so much”. You want a relationship with the intensity that m/m and m/f relationships in lit get to have a lot of? This is the one for you.
Into the Blue
Pene Henson
Goodreads
Rep: gay mc, bi Samoan mc
Why Should I Read It?
You know when best-friends-to-lovers storylines have the most exquisite pining and angst and that spills over into the love confession? That’s like here. And it’s just so great I love it so much.
Red, White & Royal Blue
Casey McQuiston
Goodreads
Rep: bi half Latinx mc with ADHD, gay li with depression
Why Should I Read It?
Okay, so this one doesn’t release for another couple of months, but I loved the love confession so much it has to be on here. I won’t say much about it to avoid spoilers, but it’s a doozy!
In Other Lands
Sarah Rees Brennan
Goodreads
Rep: bi mc, gay li
Why Should I Read It?
We all love a confession scene where a character who doesn’t usually talk about their feelings suddenly has to find the words and win back or reassure their s.o. that they do actually like them. Which is why this one is just so perfect.
Everything Leads to You
Nina LaCour
Goodreads
Rep: lesbian mcs, biracial (Black) mc
Why Should I Read It?
A confession scene that parallels an earlier scene in the book where the mc had turned down the li? Amazing! Showstopping! Spectacular!
The Pursuit Of…
Courtney Milan
Goodreads
Rep: gay mcs, Black mc
Why Should I Read It?
Okay, you really have to read this one to understand the love confession but: only Courtney Milan could make reciting the American Constitution romantic.
Autoboyography
Christina Lauren
Goodreads
Rep: bi mc, gay li
Why Should I Read It?
This book will cause you excrutiating amounts of pain, so obviously the confessions are gonna be tip-top angst as well. Because sometimes we all love an angsty confession, right?
Midnighter and Apollo
Steve Orlando
Goodreads
Rep: gay mcs (ownvoices)
Why Should I Read It?
That kind of love confession that comes after having been to the gates of hell to save your lover (we all know it).
Joyride
Jackson Lanzing & Collin Kelly
Goodreads
Rep: lesbian mcs
Why Should I Read It?
The slowburn of the enemies to friends to lovers relationship! That cliffhanger at the end of volume 2! The eventual confession! All adds up to perfection.
Peter Darling
Austin Chant
Goodreads
Rep: gay mcs, trans mc (ownvoices)
Why Should I Read It?
Let me leave you with this quote: But a chance of getting lost, he decided, was better than the certainty of losing James. Also, there’s a letter involved. Love a good letter.
So. Ten of the best love confessions right there for you.
What are some of your favourites?
