Film & TV Recs: LGBT Christmas Movies (II)

Christmas celebrations start tomorrow (if you’re Slavic, like me), and so I am finally here with a bunch of movies (and shows) you can watch to get in the mood! And if you don’t celebrate, you might still enjoy some winter-y silliness & gay kisses.

Funnily enough, though, some of my favourite gay Christmas movies are actually in Part I of this rec list, which I made last year. I strongly encourage you to check that out, too!

With Love (2021)

cr. Gloria Calderón Kellett
IMDb
Rep: mostly Mexican American cast, Mexican American gay mc, Filipino American bi mc, Mexican American nonbinary mc, genderqueer side character, Black LGBT side characters

Why Should I Watch It?

Technically only the first episode is about Christmas, but all the rest are about holidays, too. And this might just be some of the Best that television has to offer lately, in the genre. It’s wholesome, it’s smart, and it’s so very deeply about love!

Looking For Her (2022)

dir. Alexandra Swarens
Letterboxd
Rep: lesbian mcs, sapphic side characters

Why Should I Watch It?

Imagine this: you hold auditions to hire an actress to pose as your girlfriend when you visit your parents for Christmas. What could possibly go wrong? Also what could possibly be more fun to watch! Yes, it’s cheesy and sometimes doesn’t make sense, but that’s exactly the charm?

The Holiday Sitter (2022)

dir. Ali Liebert
Letterboxd
Rep: gay mcs

Why Should I Watch It?

My philosophy is that the more ridiculous a premise of a Christmas movie, the more I’m gonna enjoy it. And The Holiday Sitter understands that. Be honest and tell me, how many kid fics have you read, where the couple bonds over looking after kids who aren’t even theirs? Now you can watch that!

The Magical Christmas Tree (2021)

dir. Scott Hillman
Letterboxd
Rep: nonbinary mcs

Why Should I Watch It?

But actually, you will not find a more outlandish a movie on today’s list than this. We have a boss who’s the opposite of Grinch (though it’s not much better for everyone around), we have elfs, we have a nonbinary romance (!), we have some magic… Literally what more do you need from a Christmas romcom?

Merry & Gay (2022)

dir. Christin Baker
Letterboxd
Rep: sapphic mcs

Why Should I Watch It?

People who have seen a Christin Baker movie before know exactly what they’re getting into. People who haven’t: it’s low-budget and doesn’t hide that; it has a simple story line & sometimes stops making sense; but most importantly, it’s cute, light and sapphic. It’s the kind of movie you wanna watch after a glass of wine at the end of a long day of celebrating to unwind.

The Christmas House 2: Deck Those Halls (2021)

dir. Rich Newey
Letterboxd
Rep: gay mc & li

Why Should I Watch It?

I was actually happily surprised by this movie. I didn’t think a sequel would really hold up on its own, and I definitely didn’t think they would manage to give some more depth to the gay characters. I was wrong on both accounts, though! It’s a super cheesy comedy about brotherly rivalry, and once again the gay couple is allowed to have issues other than coming out.

The Christmas Clapback (2022)

dir. Robin Givens
Letterboxd
Rep: Black cast, sapphic characters

Why Should I Watch It?

It’s just a wholesome movie about a family who love each other! Christmas miracles do happen, guys. It’s sweet, and it’s cosy, and it won’t make you stressed out for even a second.

A Christmas to Treasure (2022)

dir. Jake Helgren
Letterboxd
Rep: gay mcs

Why Should I Watch It?

Yeah, okay, this is a movie about a holiday treasure hunt and no, I can’t really get more cheesy with this rec list. But listen, that’s the whole idea of a Christmas movie? That’s why you’re here, just admit it!

Tangerine (2015)

dir. Sean Baker
Letterboxd
Rep: Black trans mcs
TW: transphobia

Why Should I Watch It?

Not really a typical Christmas movie, by any counts. But I believe in variety. If you want to feel something before the year ends, if you want a movie that will make you question things & not just coddle you, then this is the one. It’s raw, and it’s sometimes painful, but it’s worth it.

Smiley (2022)

dir. David Martín Porras & Marta Pahissa
IMDb
Rep: Spanish cast, gay mcs, lesbian characters

Why Should I Watch It?

Messy gays & lesbians! I would stop my rec here if I could, because personally I’m always looking for shows like this. But listen, listen, you will smile, like the title say, and you will maybe cry a little, and you will feel loved through every second of it all.
