Film & TV Recs: LGBT Short Features

Listen, okay, lets be real. Sometimes you just have like 15 minutes to spare. Or sometimes 15 minutes is all that your attention span affords you. But don’t worry! Even with that limited time, you can watch amazing LGBT movies!

Query (2020)

dir. Sophie Kargman
Letterboxd
Rep: bisexual mc, Black bisexual mc

Why Should I Watch It?

Just two bros chilling, playing video games, talking about how maybe heterosexuality is forced on us by society and we should refuse to participate in that. Just two bros kissing. What’s more is there to life?

Kiss of the Rabbit God (2019)

dir. Andrew Huang
Letterboxd
Rep: Chinese cast, achillean mcs
TW: blood

Why Should I Watch It?

It’s kind of like no plot, just vibes, but actually there is plot and the vibes are part of it. The imagery is absolutely breathtaking, and I guarantee you will be thinking about this short for years to come.

Kiki and the MXfits (2018)

dir. Natalia Leite
Letterboxd
Rep: LGBT cast, predominantly Latinx cast, sapphic mc, trans character
TW: transphobia

Why Should I Watch It?

I want five seasons and a movie!! Yes, this feels more like a prologue to a proper movie, but oh boy, is it an amazing one! So vibrant, and honest, and thrilling! The LGBT experienced understood with the smallest of glances.

The End of My World (2017)

dir. Kamil Krawczycki
Letterboxd
Rep: Polish cast, gay mc

Why Should I Watch It?

Am I primarily recommending this short because it’s Polish? Maybe. Possibly. But frankly it’s a very timely piece, despite being made five years ago. It captures the spirit (lack thereof?) of our generation pretty well. Quiet, sad, and a bit lyrical.

Ryans (2016)

dir. Rain Valdez & Natalie Heltzel
Letterboxd
Rep: trans Filipino mc, trans side character

Why Should I Watch It?

I’m not saying this is a perfect romcom, but it is a perfect romcom. So much is packed into those 15 minutes or so. There’s nothing that a full length romantic comedy can do that Ryans can’t, and actually quite a bit the other way around (like having a trans mc).

Heart Shot (2022)

dir. Marielle Woods
Letterboxd
Rep: Black sapphic mc, sapphic mc
TW: blood, guns, violence, murder

Why Should I Watch It?

Have you ever wanted to watch a ridiculous, over the top, dramatic movie about sapphic teens that will leave you with more questions than answers, and also traumatise you a little bit? Well, do I have a treat for you!

Madhu (2022)

dir. Tanmay Chowdhary & Tanvi Chowdhary
Letterboxd
Rep: Hindu sapphic mcs

Why Should I Watch It?

It’s such a magical story. It blends together the past and the future, in a mesmerising mosaic of memories and dreams. Iconic sapphic culture, all of it.

Dirty (2020)

dir. Matthew Puccini
Letterboxd
Rep: achillean mcs

Why Should I Watch It?

This movie’s elevator pitch should really just be “Sex education is so important!”. And it would correct, of course. It’s a fun, honest & beautiful take on having sex for the first time, and not expecting the things you should have been.

Her Own Music (2020)

dir. Olivia Aleksoski
Letterboxd
Rep: sapphic mcs

Why Should I Watch It?

There’s something to be said about LGBT movies about teens, they just hit in a completely different way. This one is very beautiful and delicate, and despite technically telling a story of a first love, manages to also talk about identity and learning to be true to one’s self.

For Nonna Anna (2017)

dir. Luis De Filippis
Letterboxd
Rep: trans mc

Why Should I Watch It?

Name one thing more tender than a grandparent fully accepting their LGBT grandkid. The experience is rendered all the more beautiful & true here, since it’s actually ownvoices. Not saying only trans people should be allowed to tell trans stories, but…
