It’s a new year and, since the number of book releases we know about per month is just tipping into unwieldy (June alone last year had 150 books to add to the post, not to mention the 50+ more we found later), we’ve decided to change up the way we’re doing releases posts. We started organising releases posts by genre around halfway through last year, so we’re sticking with that here. The major difference? Each genre gets its own post, which will eventually cover a period of 6 months. So, like with our various other releases posts (although those go up all at once, whereas here we’ll add each month), these are more easily edited and added to! Which means, even if we miss a book, we can better come back and add it to the post. A win for everyone!
In this post, you’ll find the collection of contemporary books that we know about from January to June of 2022!

Please note: this list previously included a book by A. J. Sass. However, on learning that Sass plans to partake in a trip to Isr*el, thus legitimising an apartheid state, we have elected to remove the book from the post. We do not feel we can support someone who disregards Palestinian lives in such a manner.

Wow! I run a Facebook book with over 500 Bi Poets, and I posted about your blog and awards there suggesting that people nominate their fave 2022 LGBT books. However, one member pointed out to me your following post as problematic: “Please note: this list previously included a book by A. J. Sass. While neither I nor the person who pointed out your problematic post support the policies of the Israeli government, we are both Jews. I’ve never been to Israel, but most of my relatives have, and many Jews travel there for religious, cultural or family reasons. If you are lumping all people who travel to Israel for whatever reason as “legitimising an apartheid state,” then I think you’re veering out of responsible activism and into antisemitism, and I don’t want anything to do with you. I won’t support your blog or promote your awards, and I’ve deleted my post informing my members about what would otherwise have been a nice opportunity.

You are, of course, entitled to decide whether or not to participate in our awards by whatever criteria you deem fit. That’s your right.
It is also our right to tell you the following. To conflate anti-Zionism with antisemitism is right out of the Zionist playbook. It makes people too fearful of (rightfully) calling out racist and colonial attitudes. Calling anti-Zionism antisemitic serves only to delegitimise the Palestinian resistance to an apartheid state. Zionism is, and always has been, about colonising and settling on Palestine. We oppose that and will not support anyone who does not. This includes visiting Israel.
You say you do not support the actions of the Israeli government, but you cannot divorce those from the actions of the people. After all, the people elect the government who acts, in theory, entirely with their support. We don’t see mass protests out of Israel over the bombing of Gaza and the continued genocide of the Palestinian people. We see the Israel Occupation Force protecting settlers who assault Palestinians and invade and steal their homes instead, just as they have been doing since 1948. If you don’t believe us, then scroll through the social media timelines of Palestinians. Read some of Ilan PappΓ©’s works on the subject.
By travelling to Israel, you are supporting an apartheid state, a settler-colonial state β a description applied by the Human Rights Watch last year β with your wallet, even if not your words. Regardless of your reasoning for doing so, Palestinian liberation groups have asked that you don’t. The apartheid state of South Africa was deconstructed with the aid of boycotts, divestments and sanctions, just as the apartheid state of Israel will be. Not travelling to Israel is one of the very reasonable things that the BDS movement and Palestinians ask β you cannot say you are for Palestinian liberation if you fail to see this point.
On top of this, you say you know people travelling for cultural reasons: while they are freely able to travel around the land, Palestinians who were kicked out of that same land they’ll be enjoying their stay on, are holding onto their house keys in hopes that one day they’ll be allowed in. Most of the indigenous population can’t move freely on said land: who more than they has ‘cultural’ reasons to walk upon that land? Being able to visit is a privilege that indigenous people don’t have and to visit freely while children are being murdered in an open air prison right next to you is incredibly telling of an individual’s priorities and how they value human life beyond their religious group. Israel, this past year, has killed over 50 Palestinian children, while criminalising the charities and organisations that work to protect Palestinian children. In the past 20 years, that number is upwards of 2250.
By equating resistance to antisemitism, you invalidate the decades of efforts anti-Zionist Jews have put into distancing Zionism, a settler colonial extremist project, from Judaism. Judith Butler, in the introduction to On Antisemitism β a collection of essays from Jewish Voice for Peace β says,
We do not expect this comment to convince you to change your mind, but hope that we have put our position forward clearly.
