Book Reviews: Comics to Cap Off Your Spooky Season

October is drawing to a close now and we’re approaching Halloween itself. And, since there are three days left in the month (and only two more months in the rest of the year), perhaps you’re starting to think about how best to complete your Goodreads challenge. Fret not! Because today, we come bearing comic recs.

So if you’re looking for the perfect short read to cap off your spooky season, Boom! Studios has you covered! Check these four out and let us know what you think!

Abbott: 1973

38329334._sy475_

Saladin Ahmed & Sami Kivelä
Goodreads
Rep: Black bi mc, Chinese American sapphic li
Genre: adult horror
CWs: violence, gore, racism

Reasons to Read

One. If you enjoyed Abbott, then get ready for Abbott: 1973 which introduces new characters, raises the stakes, and burns down everything you’ve ever believed in. It’s basically the perfect second arc to the series and I can guarantee you don’t want to miss out on this one.

Two. This is a comic for properly spooking you, in a pulls-no-punches sort of way. You find yourself fully absorbed by the story, you’re right there alongside Elena Abbott, through the fear and the ghosts and the developing mystery.

Three. The art in this comic really brings to life the world its set in, with the ghosts and the magic, true, but also with the more mundane aspects of the world. All of it combines with the story to make you feel even more like you’re sitting in 1970s Detroit.

Wynd: Flight of the Prince

41719140._sy475_-2

James Tynion IV & Michael Dialynas
Goodreads
Rep: gay mc
Genre: young adult fantasy

Reasons to Read

One. Such a wholesome story! It really is about growing into yourself and learning how not to be a horrible person, about the prejudices you have to face and other obstacles you have to deal with. Because despite what other people might think, no one’s life is ever perfect.

Two. The bonds between people! Familial ones, but also between a literal found family; friendships that you know you have and the ones that take you by surprise. It’s very much about trusting other people.

Three. It’s very quietly gay, really, in that soft kind of way of first crushes, but also loudly gay in that Wynd’s crush is so very clearly on another boy. And yet, all of that is wholly unremarkable in this fantasy world, which makes it a delight to read.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Willow

49080539._sy475_

Mariko Tamaki, Natacha Bustos & Eleonora Bruni
Goodreads
Rep: lesbian mc
Genre: young adult fantasy

Reasons to Read

One. Obviously, if you’re a fan of Buffy, you should read this. It hits that nostalgia spot perfectly. But at the same time it doesn’t really have the same feel as the series, despite there technically kind of being a Big Bad.

Two. It’s very much a story about Willow, in a sense that the plot doesn’t throw you away with surprises. Instead, it’s one of those quite ones, where the whole thing really is about the main character learning something about themselves. In this case, it’s Willow learning to be at peace.

Three. No spoilers, but literally what could be better than a community with no men in it?

Specter Inspectors

41967043

Bowen McCurdy & Kaitlyn Musto
Goodreads
Rep: sapphic mcs, nonbinary mc
Genre: new adult, paranormal

Reasons to Read

One. If you like your comics to have some chaos, a sprinkling of hijinks, and a side of demonic possession, then Spector Inspectors is the comic for you. It’s five issues of pure fun and a very sweet romance besides.

Two. Found family is actually something that can be so personal. And what better form to take than in a (failing) ghost hunting show?

Three. It’s the kind of comic that you finish and you immediately want maybe another few hundred issues of these kids investigating ghosts. Or maybe you’ll settle for just one more volume so long as it brings them back to you… possibly. What more can you want from a graphic novel?

So, have any of these caught your eye?
