Music Releases: LGBT songs of July 2019

I decided to change it up a little bit from now on. Mostly because choosing only ten songs each month is giving me anxiety… So the way it’s gonna work now is this: I will still decide which ten songs were my absolute favourites from a month and include them in the post.

But I will also put all the songs I loved on the mix, which is always a bonus part of the post anyway. (I might update the old mixes so check them out, too!)

And for those of you who are here for the first time, you can catch up on my previous posts here!

Music Releases: LGBT songs of June 2019

Yes, I know, those posts tended to feature ten songs (and a headache for me, when I had to cut the lists to just ten titles…), but I figured, you know… June was Pride month. What better excuse to include more songs? Right?

Which is to say today I bring you 20 songs by LGBT artists that came out in June 2019 and are my absolute best of all the songs from that month.

In case you missed it: my January, February, March, April & May choices!

(And remember, there’s a Spotify playlist with all the songs at the end of the post!)

Music Releases: LGBT songs of May 2019

It’s a great problem to have when there’s so much music by LGBT artists coming out every month, that it’s impossible to chose top ten songs! And I’m doing it for you guys, I’m choosing my absolutely all-time favourites!

In case you missed it: my January, February, March & April choices!

(And remember, there’s a Spotify playlist with all the May songs at the end of the post!)

Music Releases: LGBT songs of March 2019

I’m not going to lie, guys. Choosing only ten songs each month is really hard work! But I needed an even number for all the months so really, I played myself…

This also brings me to another point: obviously, if I put a song from a full album on this list & not a single, I encourage y’all to check them all out! Check out the artists in general!

Here you can also check out my 10 fav songs of January and February.

(And remember, there’s a Spotify playlist with all the March songs at the end of the post!)

The ten songs I chose January are here!

Music Releases: LGBT songs of January 2019

I wanted to make some kind of music rec list because despite claiming this is an LGBT media blog, we don’t really talk about much apart from books. And, in part thanks to a twitter poll I ran, I figured a “fav songs of the year” kind of post might be a good idea. But then I started listing songs and the number grew & grew & grew… Until I realised I have no choice but to make this “fav songs of a month” instead.

Yes, I’m aware it’s the end of October. But that just means I have some catching up to do! You can expect those posts every few weeks, until I get to the point where I can just make a rec list at the end of each month as it ends.

Anyway, important notes: all the songs I will list are by out LGBT artists, because this is the kind of blog we’re running here. And I’ll be linking them to YouTube and putting all songs together in a playlist on Spotify in case anyone wants to check them out that way. The playlist (with more songs!) is at the end of the post!

    Music Recs: Pride Month Special

We don’t talk about music a lot on our blog, but I guess when we do, it’s with a bang! Which is to say, I’m here today with a list of 60 LGBT artists. And yes, I say artists, not just songs – each and every one of them is an out member of our community. (Well, there are a few bands and some of them only have a lead singer who matches that description, but you know!)

I had to make some decisions regarding the way of presenting all this beauty to you. First of all, I divided those sixty artists into three groups of wlw, mlm & those who are not cis. (I was gonna go with “trans/nonbinary”, but there are also genderfluid, gender nonconforming artists, even a Two-Spirit one, so I figured I need a pretty broad umbrella term here). Obviously, there are some intersections within those groups, but I wanted even numbers… And lastly, I linked them all to my favourite album/single of theirs on Spotify, so I could put covers & make it all look pretty.

So! Take a quiz and figure out who should you listen to!* Or just scroll through them all.

    Take the quiz!

*Charlotte made me specify that when I say “dancing alone in your room” in the quiz, what I mean is dancing slowly with your eyes closed, the sound of rain coming through the window & maybe by the end of it you won’t be as tired anymore.

Music Recs: 6 Sapphic Songs as Delicate as Mary Oliver’s Poetry

I’m sure I’m not the only one who still can’t believe Mary Oliver died. She was such an amazing person, such a calming force in this world. Her poetry was always simple but evoking the most complicated feelings; delicate but hitting straight in the heart with a power of a bulldozer. She was one of a kind. She was making the world a softer place just by sharing her words with us.

So I was wondering how to celebrate her beautiful legacy on Reads Rainbow, because there was no doubt in my mind we have to talk about a lesbian poet as iconic as her. And I decided that as much as I love her poetry, I want to do something different. I mean, I can let you know what are my favourite collections of hers… But I wanted to translate her tenderness into another medium. Hence the songs.

What works better with poetry than music, right? (I’m from Poland, we have a whole genre literally called ‘sung poetry’. Remind me to talk about that more some day.)

I selected six songs by sapphic artists that sounded to me as softly as Mary’s poems. I hope you’ll enjoy. And when you’re already at it, check out what 2018 LGBT music videos I recommended the other day.
