Guest Post: Queer World Cinema

The final one of our guest posts for Pride takes you on a trip of the world in 160 films and short features! If you’re looking for a great way to close out the month, this is it!

With this blog post I wanted to celebrate the beauty of the queer community around the whole world through its cinematic endeavours. I am using the past tense because while I mostly accomplished my mission, in some cases I had to compromise those standards I had set for the media I was going to include. I wanted to highlight films, documentaries and short flicks produced and set in all the countries recognised worldwide and some of those with limited recognition, avoiding the involvement of foreign countries and especially the interference of past colonisers, but in order to have a fuller list I had to adjust those guidelines. (I added an asterisk near the titles to specify that the movie, documentary or short film was not produced and/or shot entirely by and in the represented country.) Sometimes, even with those alterations, I came up empty handed anyway.

Nevertheless, I am quite proud of what I achieved and I hope you will appreciate this post and the titles I ended up listing. I want to clarify though that is not a comprehensive list whatsoever. Some countries have way more to offer and I urge anyone reading this blog post to also look for queer media outside of the Anglosphere. There are so many interesting movies out there waiting to be savoured! Take this post as a jumping point into a whole new world of queer cinema.
